Introduction

This document contains links to various sites that can aid you with the initial development of your site and, once complete, the promotion of your site.

Development

W3Schools

W3Schools.com is a good site for learning web development; they cover most areas, such as html, JavaScript and PHP. All the material is provided as tutorials and references - it is therefore a good starting point for novices, whilst also acting as a reference for more experienced developers.

PHP.net is the main reference site for the PHP language. As the site acts as a reference, it is not particularly good for those wishing to learn the language. Although it does contain an introductory tutorial. W3Schhols.com also contains a PHP tutorial

Fotolia is an excellent source of stock photos and graphics. All images can be purchased in various resolutions. The lower resolution options are less than £0.60p and are more than adequate for most site developers needs. A minimum of £10 must be credited to you account on sign-up, but this will allow you to populate your site with many professional images.

Promotion

Google AdWords

Although you are required to pay for Google AdWords, it is one of the quickest and easiest methods of promoting your site. You have full control over your budget by setting how much you are prepared to pay for a click and how much you are prepared to spend per day. If you are going to pay to promote your site, this is probably the best place to start.

Dmoz is a human edited directory of web sites. It is free to list on dmoz, but, as the directory is maintained by volunteers, it can take a very long time for a site to appear. The editors will only accept quality sites, because of this the major search engines highly value a listing. Don't be too disappointed if you can't get your site listed, but it is well worth a try.

Yahoo!

Yahoo is another important human edited directory, they used to allow free submission for not-for-profit sites. Unfortunately, they now charge around $300 annually for inclusion. If you are serious about your site and have money to spare, this is probably the best place to spend it - all major search engines value a Yahoo directory listing.

Yahoo!

If your promotion budget is non-existent, the best course of action is to try to rank well in the free listings of the major search engines. Links on the left are provided to the submission pages of the main three. Submitting alone will not guarantee a good listing, to succeed you will need good content and good in-bound links from other sites. There has been much written about the subject, search the internet for SEO or 'search engine optimization' will reveal a whole wealth of information on the subject.

One thing to be wary of, there are a lot of scammers out there who will make promises about obtaining instant top positions in the search engines, this is just not possible at any price - beware.
